Review for repaired isotope production facility

A mechanical failure that caused the suspension of Australian manufacture of technetium-99m (Tc-99m) generators has been addressed, but resumption of production is still some weeks away, the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation said on 20 July. ANSTO is continuing to import generators of the medical isotope from the USA.


India says French and US vendor talks ongoing

India is in active talks with French and US companies on projects to build new nuclear power plants at Jaitapur and Kovvada, the country's minister of state, Jitendra Singh, has confirmed to parliament.


Korea relies on nuclear to cope with heat wave

Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power has decided to restart Hanbit 3 and Hanul 2 in the second and third week of August in order to meet growing demand for electricity as the summer heat wave continues, Korea JoongAng Daily reported today. The units have been offline for maintenance work since the second week of May and are expected to be brought back online by 12 August.


South Ukraine 3 fully loaded with Westinghouse fuel

South Ukraine plant - 48Westinghouse Electric Company announced yesterday that unit 3 of the South Ukraine nuclear power plant has been loaded with a full core of its VVER-1000 fuel. The unit, near Yuzhnoukrainsk in the Mykolaiv province of Ukraine, thus becomes the first VVER-1000 reactor anywhere to operate with fuel assemblies not supplied by Russia.


IAEA nurtures nuclear education in Asia Pacific

IAEA teacher training course in Indonesia - 48The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) held the first in a series of six regional training courses for secondary school science teachers last month in Indonesia. The courses aim to equip teachers in Asia Pacific to inspire a new generation of nuclear scientists and engineers by engaging students and enhancing their understanding of nuclear science and technology.


L3 MAPPS, Terrestrial team for IMSR simulation

L3 MAPPS-Terrestrial Energy - July 2018 - 48Canada's L3 MAPPS and Terrestrial Energy have signed an agreement to develop real-time simulation for Terrestrial's Integral Molten Salt Reactor (IMSR). Terrestrial aims to commercialise the modular reactor design - which can produce 400 MWt (190 MWe) of energy - in the 2020s.


Sandia simulates used fuel storage cask temperatures

Dry cask simulator - 48A scaled test assembly that simulates a dry cask storage container for used nuclear fuel has been constructed by researchers at the USA's Sandia National Laboratories. It will be used to study how fuel temperatures change during storage and how the fuel's peak temperatures affect the integrity of the metal cladding surround the fuel.


US government to investigate uranium imports

At the request of two domestic uranium producers, the US Department of Commerce has launched an investigation into whether "the present quantity and circumstances" of uranium imports threatens national security. However, the US nuclear energy industry has warned that a suggested quota on imports would have a significant financial impact on the country's reactor operators.


SNC-Lavalin, Holtec create decommissioning JV

SNC-Lavalin and Holtec International group have formed a USA-based joint venture company to work on the accelerated decommissioning of retired nuclear power plants. The new company, Comprehensive Decommissioning International, is headquartered in Camden, New Jersey.


Review of Le Creusot records passes milestone

Creusot_Forge_(Areva)_64x48France's Framatome announced today that it has completed identifying and characterising deviations in all of the manufacturing records from the Le Creusot site for forgings used in French nuclear power plants. Manufacturing operations at the facility - which were suspended in December 2015 following the discovery of quality assurance issues - resumed in January.
