Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) - ANL is one of the US Department of Energy's largest research centres with a long history of research and development in nuclear reactor technology. Masses of information on the present and historic work at the site, which today classes Advanced Nuclear Technology Research and Development in its remit.
Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) - Government body established to provide scientific and technical advice across the nuclear fuel cycle to government and to support Australia's national strategic and nuclear policy objectives. Operates large nuclear science and technology based facilities, undertaking research on nuclear science and the nuclear fuel cycle. Annual reports available on website.
Austrian Research Centre, Siebersdorf (ARCS) - The Austrian Research Centers Seibersdorf is Austria's largest center for applied research.
Belgium Nuclear Research Centre (SCK- CEN) - This is an institute of public utility under the tutorial of the Belgian Federal Minister in charge of energy. The main research projects are: nuclear safety; radioactive waste research; and radiation protection and safeguards.
Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) - The major objective of the broad spectrum of activities at BARC is primarily to provide R&D support needed to sustain India's nuclear power programme in relation to concepts, designs, materials, reliability and safety.
Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) - BNL is the US government research laboratory operating as the National Nuclear Data Center. It offers services on low and medium energy nuclear physics and focuses particularly on neutron, charged-particle and photo-nuclear reactions, nuclear structure and decay data.
Bulgarian Institute for Nuclear Research and Nuclear Energy (INRNE) - The Institute was founded in 1972, carrying the main part of activities of the former Institute of Physics with Atomic Research Centre.
Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry (CRIEPI) - The Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry was founded in 1951 to serve as the comprehensive central research institution for the electric power industry. Centre Nationale de l'Energie des Sciences et des Techniques Nucleaires (CNESTEN) - Moroccan nuclear research centre.
CERN - CERN is the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the world's largest particle physics centre. Site includes information on the Energy Amplifier, Carlo Rubbia's work to apply particle accelerator technology to nuclear energy generation and waste management. Commissariat a l'Energie Atomique (CEA) - The CEA is a French public institution involved in fundamental and technological research related to nuclear technology. 16,000 people work for the CEA in 10 research centres.
Egyptian Atomic Energy Authority (AEA) - The Egyptian AEA was established in 1955, its mandate being to enable the country of the efficient utilisation of the peaceful applications of nuclear energy. Details of current research projects are given.
European Commission Joint Research Centre (JRC) - The JRC is the European Union's scientific and technical research laboratory and an integral part of the European Commission. The centre's nuclear research focuses on both nuclear safeguards and nuclear safety and includes work at the High Flux Reactor in Petten under a supplementary programme. It also has a programme that addresses the JRC's historical nuclear liabilities including its shutdown nuclear installations.
Forschungszentrum Julich - A staff of over 4000 at this German research centre are investigating current issues in the areas of energy, environment, life, information and matter in one of the largest research institutions in Europe.
Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (FZK) - The Forschungszentrum Karlsruhe (formerly Karlsruhe Nuclear Research Center, KfK) is one of the largest non-commercial science and engineering research institutions in Germany. It works on research and development problems of public interest, exclusively for peaceful purposes, in the fields of technology and the environment. Hanford Site - The Hanford Site is managed by the US Department of Energy, the successor agency to the Atomic Energy Commission. As a plutonium production complex, Hanford played a pivotal role in the nation's nuclear defence for more than 40 years beginning in the 1940's with the Manhattan Project. Currently, Hanford is engaged in the world's largest environmental cleanup project.
Hungarian Academy of Sciences - Atomic Energy Research Institute (AEKI) - The institute is mainly active in basic and applied research related to nuclear energy, as well as practical applications. The main research areas of AEKI are reactor physics, thermal hydraulics, fuel behaviour studies, material sciences, related aspects of informatics (simulators, core monitoring, etc), health physics, environmental investigations, nuclear electronics and chemistry. The institute operates a 10 MW research reactor.
Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR) - The centre was established in 1971, under the Indian Department of Atomic Energy. IGCAR is engaged in a broad-based multidiscipilinary programme of scientific research and advanced engineering directed towards the development of Fast Breeder Reactor (FBR) technology
Indonesian National Nuclear Energy Agency (BATAN) - The organisation conducts research into the uses of nuclear technologies.
Institute for Energy Technology (IFE) - The Research Institute for Energy and Nuclear Technology in Norway is an independent foundation established in 1948. IFE's nuclear technology comprises all activities that are directly or indirectly related to the Institute's two research reactors, in Halden and at Kjeller.
Institute of Advanced Energy, Kyoto University (IAE) - The institute consists of three research divisions - Advanced Energy Generation Division; Advanced Energy Conversion Division; and Advanced Energy Utilization Division. Details of research projects are given.
Instituto de Pesquisas Energeticas e Nucleares (IPEN) - The Nuclear and Energy Research Institute, IPEN, since its foundation in 1956, has played a decisive role in the development of nuclear science and technology in Brazil. The site includes the institute's progress report.
Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Nucleares (ININ) - Website of Mexico's national nuclear research institute.
International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) - This is a joint international research and development project that aims to demonstrate the scientific and technical feasibility of fusion power. The partners in the project are the European Union (represented by EURATOM), Japan, China, India, South Korea, Russia and the USA. ITER will be constructed in Europe, at Cadarache in southern France.
Israel Atomic Energy Commission (IAEC) - The Commssion, established in 1952, operates two research centers: the Soreq Nuclear Research Center and the Nuclear Research Center Negev. The IAEC advises the government of Israel in areas of nuclear policy and in setting priorities in nuclear research and development.
Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) - The organization was created through the merger of the Japan Nuclear Cycle Development Institute (JNC) and the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAERI) in 2005.
Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) - The Institute - an international intergovernmental organization - was established through the Convention signed on 26 March 1956 by the founding Member States with the aim of uniting their efforts, scientific and material potentials for investigations of the fundamental properties of matter. It is based in Russia.
Jozef Stefan Institute (IJS) - This is the leading Slovene research organisation and operates a 250 kW TRIGA Mark II research reactor. The IJS also runs the country's Nuclear Training Centre, whose main activity is training of Krsko nuclear power plant personnel.
Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) - Founded in 1959, KAERI, as the sole national nuclear R&D research institution, has greatly contributed to strengthening the competitive edge of the nation's science and technology by achieving technological self-reliance in nuclear technology and expanding its research activities to other related areas.
Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBL) - Founded in 1931, this is the oldest of the US national laboratories. The laboratory is a multiprogram lab where research in advanced materials, life sciences, energy efficiency, detectors and accelerators serves America's needs in technology and the environment.
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) - The laboratory is a US Department of Energy national laboratory operated by the University of California. Lawrence Livermore's mission is to apply science and technology in the national interest, with a focus on global security, global ecology, and bioscience.
Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) - Los Alamos National Laboratory is a US Department of Energy (DOE) laboratory, managed by the University of California. The Laboratory is one of the largest multidisciplinary institutions in the world.
Moscow Power Engineering Institute (MPEI) - The institute was founded at 1930 and is now a state higher education institution, with the status of technical university. MPEI has its main site in Moscow, with two branches in Smolensk and in Volzgskij.
Nuclear Materials Control Centre (NMCC) - The NMCC was established in 1972 and plays an important role in Japan as the principal organisation providing technical support to the government in the field of nuclear safeguards. *In JAPANESE only*
Nuclear Research & Consultancy Group (NRG) - The company offers a wide range of services to energy utilities, government organisations and various branches of industry - including the nuclear, financial services and medical sectors. NRG is a major producer of medical isotopes in Europe. In addition, NRG participates in technology development programs for advanced nuclear power reactor designs.
Nuclear Research Institute Rez (NRI) - The Institute is the immediate successor of the Nuclear Research Institute which was founded as a part of R&D base for the Czechoslovak nuclear programme within the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in 1955. In December 1992 the NIR was transformed into a joint-stock company.
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) - This is a multiprogram science and technology laboratory managed for the US Department of Energy by UT-Battelle LLC.
Oxford Research Group (ORG) - ORG was established in 1982 to carry out research into the structures and processes of nuclear- weapon decision-making in NATO and the then Warsaw Pact. Its research agenda subsequently expanded to include secrecy and accountability, arms export control, military R&D in Europe, conflict resolution, new nuclear weapons, the control of fissile material and nuclear proliferation issues. Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) - A Swiss research centre which includes a Nuclear Energy & Safety Research Department.
Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) - The institute is mandated by law to undertake research and development activities in the peaceful uses of nuclear energy, to institute regulations on the said uses and to carry out the enforcement of said regulations to protect the health and safety of radiation workers and the general public.

Research Centre for Energy, Environment and Technology (CIEMAT) - This Spanish research centre is supported by the Ministry of Education and Science. Its main objectives are: to find solutions to improve the use of resources and energy generation systems; to develop alternative energy sources and to solve the problems of the Spanish companies regarding energy and its effects on the environment. Risoe National Laboratory - Risoe is a national laboratory under the Danish Ministry of Information Technology and Research.
Royal Institute of Technology (Sweden) - Department of Energy Technology (KTH-EGI) - The KTH Department of Energy Technology covers the broad areas of energy conversion, electricity generation and utilisation. In the nuclear area there are divisions on reactor engineering, safety and nuclear technology. The Nuclear Technology Centre aims to enhance the interaction between the Swedish nuclear inspectorate, the nuclear industry and KTH. Also includes access to KTH Library catalogue.
RRC Kurchatov Institute - Russia's first state national research centre, formerly the I.V.Kurchatov Institute of Atomic Energy, founded in 1941.
Russian Institute of Physics and Power Engineering (IPPE) - The IPPE was established in 1946 to solve scientific and engineering problems of nuclear power development. The site includes details of Russian reactor designs, as well as nuclear power plants in operation throughout Russia.

Sandia National Laboratory - Sandia is a national security laboratory operated for the US Department of Energy by the Sandia Corporation, a Lockheed Martin Co. It designs all non-nuclear components for the USA's nuclear weapons, performs a wide variety of energy research and development projects, and works on assignments that respond to national security threats - both military and economic.
Savannah River Site (SRS) - The SRS is operated by the Washington Savannah River Company for the US Department of Energy.
Slovakian Nuclear Power Plant Research Institute (VUJE) - The institute addresses specific research and development tasks related to the design, construction and commissioning of power reactors, as well as their operation, maintenance, repair and modernisation. The institute also conducts research into reactor decommissioning and disposal.
South African Nuclear Energy Corporation (NECSA) - This was established as a public company in terms of the Nuclear Energy Act, 1999 and is wholly-owned by the State. Apart from several ancillary functions, the main functions of Necsa are to undertake and promote research and development in the field of nuclear energy and radiation sciences and technology; to process source material, special nuclear material and restricted material; and to co-operate with persons in matters falling within these functions. Apart from its main operations at Pelindaba, Necsa also operates the Vaalputs radioactive waste-disposal facility.
St Petersburg Nuclear Physics Institute (PNPI) - At present the staff of the Institute includes more than 600 scientists and about 1000 engineers.
T3UK - This is the UK's first purpose-built test, training, research and development centre to support a UKP70 billion nuclear clean-up programme. The centre, in Thurso, Scotland, was launched in August 2006.
UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) - The UKAEA was incorporated as a statutory corporation in 1954 and pioneered the development of nuclear energy in the UK. Today it is responsible for managing the decommissioning of the nuclear reactors and other radioactive facilities used for the nuclear R&D programme. It is also responsible for the UK's input to the European fusion research programme.
