Dr Evgeny O Adamov

Dr Evgeny O Adamov is the Minister of Atomic Energy of the Russian Federation, a position to which he was appointed by President Boris Yeltsin in 1998. He graduated in 1962 from the Moscow Aviation Institute, and holds a Doctor of Science degree. He began his career in the Kurchatov Institute in Moscow as an engineer, leaving in 1986 as the Deputy Director of the Institute. During his time at the Kurchatov, Dr Adamov participated in the establishment and development of a number of nuclear installations and reactor engineering support systems. He also contributed to the development of high temperature reactors. In 1986 he was nominated as Director General of the Nikiet Institute in Moscow, which is involved in the development of nuclear reactor designs, including research and submarine reactors. In May to August 1986, he took a direct part in dealing with the consequences of the Chernobyl accident, co-ordinating the activities of specialists and visiting the site a number of times. He has published over 100 scientific papers.
