Dr Zack T Pate was elected Chairman of the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) in May 1997. In 1998 he was named Chairman Emeritus of the Institute of Nuclear Power Operations (INPO) of the USA. This followed 18 years of service with INPO, including 14 years as President and CEO and a period as Chairman. From 1958 to 1980, Dr Pate served in the US Navy. His assignments included being Chief Engineer and Commanding Officer of nuclear-powered submarines. He was awarded a Legion of Merit. During his last three years with the navy, he was a special assistant to Admiral Rickover at the Naval Reactors Headquarters in Washington. He has received several awards and honours for his work in the field of nuclear power safety and reliability, including election to the US National Academy of Engineering in 1997, the William S Lee Award for Industry Leadership from US nuclear industry in 1998, and the James N Landis Medal from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 1999. Dr Pate graduated from the US Naval Academy in 1958. In 1970 he received a PhD in nuclear engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a director of Southern Company and of Michon Inc, an internet company. |
