Prof Risto Tarjanne studied in the Department of Technical Physics at the Helsinki University of Technology, obtaining a masters degree in 1969, and a doctorate of technology in 1977. His doctoral dissertation was on the feasibility of small heating reactors for district and process heat production. From 1970 to 1972 he worked for the Finnish Ministry of Trade and Industry, being a visiting researcher at Atomenergi in Studsvik (Sweden) in 1970, and working on a heating reactor project feasibility study in 1971-72. He then joined the Technical Research Centre of Finland as Project Manager for the Heating Reactor Project. From 1974 to 1979 he was at Lappeenranta University of Technology as Acting Associate Professor in Nuclear Engineering. He then joined EKONO Consulting Engineers as Assistant Manager and then Manager of the Energy Planning Office. In 1989 he moved to the FINNIDA agency of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (which is responsible for development assistance) as an energy and telecommunications advisor. In 1990 he returned to Lappeenranta University of Technology as Professor of Energy Economics, the position which he currently holds. He took leave from this position from 1994 to 1997 to act as Director of the Asian Institute of Technology's centre in Hanoi, Vietnam. |
