Pedro Miguel Santos de Sampaio Nunes obtained a degree in civil engineering in 1975, specialising in urban planning. In 1974, he joined the Department of Projects and Planning of the Ministry of Transport and Communications of Angola. In 1976 he moved to Lisbon as Assistant to the Deputy Secretary of State of the Ministry of Housing and Construction, and Assistant to the Minister of Housing and Construction. In 1978 he became Head of Cabinet to the Secretary of State of Public Works, and two years later became Head of Cabinet to the Minister of Housing and Public Works. He took the position of Vice President of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Lisboa in 1981. In 1983, he became Deputy Director General of the Portuguese government's Secretariat for European Accession, and in 1985 he was appointed Deputy Director General of the Directorate General of the European Communities in the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1986, he became Deputy Head of Cabinet of the European Commissioner Mr António Cardoso e Cunha. He took up the position of Director of Energy Technologies in the Directorate General for Energy of the European Commission in 1993, and in 2000 became Director of Conventional Energies in the Directorate General for Energy and Transport of the European Commission. |
