Dr Francesco Venneri is currently working with General Atomics (San Diego, US) on nuclear waste destruction using High Temperature Gas Cooled Reactor (HTGR) technology. He received his PhD in Nuclear Engineering and Plasma Physics at the University of Illinois in 1988. In 1990 he joined Los Alamos National Laboratory to work in the Controlled Thermonuclear Reactions (CTR) Division. In 1992 he started working with Charles Bowman, one of the initiators of the Los Alamos Accelerator-driven Transmutation of Nuclear Waste (ATW) Project. From 1993 to 1997, he was the Science and Technology Co-ordinator for the project, before becoming Project Leader in March 1997. After substantial US Department of Energy funding was obtained in 1999 for the Los Alamos ATW Project (now the DOE-AAA Project), Francesco Venneri has taken a two-year leave from the Los Alamos Laboratory to pursue promising and practical implementations of the nuclear waste destruction concept using HTGR technology. |
