Mr Yves Marie Garcier is Vice President for Radiation Protection in EDF. He was born in 1947, and qualified as a medical doctor at the University of Lyon.
He began working in general practice in 1974. Since 1981, he has specialized in occupational health issues, including ergonomics and medical approaches to disaster scenarios. In 1983, he joined the medical staff at EDF’s Saint-Alban nuclear power plant. Subsequently promoted to become the plant’s medical director, he was given responsibility for the staff healthcare monitoring program, organizing emergency health plans, developing the plant’s health and safety management policy, representing EDF at the Labour Ministry and the radiation-induced Occupational Health Diseases Committee, etc. In 1996, Yves Garcier launched the iodine tablet distribution program in areas surrounding nuclear power plants for consumption in the event of a nuclear accident. Having studied and compared practices in other countries, he coordinated rollout of the national distribution program, with Saint-Alban as the lead site. In September 1999, he was appointed Vice-President for Radiation Protection, with responsibility for management of radiation protection within EDF’s Nuclear Power Generation Division. He is now EDF’s spokesman for this specialist field, with across-the-board responsibility for radiation protection issues in both the operational and medical spheres, and also monitors radiation protection activities at France’s 20 nuclear power plants. He is also in charge of the transportation of radioactive materials (safety and security). |
