Mr Mayson is Director of Energy Unit of the British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL), responsible for all BNFL’s work in the UK on future energy options. He graduated in physics from Oxford University in 1976, and is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics.
Mr Mayson started his career as a nuclear physicist, and has since worked in the nuclear industry for nearly 30 years in a wide variety of safety, technical and project management roles on both reactors and chemical plants. This time has included design development and commissioning work on the final British Advanced Gas Cooled Reactors (AGR) with the National Nuclear Corporation (NNC). After joining BNFL in 1979, he spent over a decade contributing to and ultimately leading safety case development work on the massive (over £3Bn) construction programme at Sellafield. In the early 1990's he spent three years at the Royal Naval Dockyard at Devonport as a Senior Manager on the Trident Submarine refitting programme. For the 5 years up to 2002 he headed up a department of about 300 safety and environmental professionals in BNFL. In 2002, he became Director of BNFL’s future reactor systems development work and in 2004 he was appointed as the Director of BNFL’s Energy Unit. |
