Mr. Taniguchi joined the IAEA as Deputy Director General, Head of Department of Nuclear Safety and Security in August 2001. He is in charge of nuclear safety, including the development of new international safety standards for nuclear facilities and the disposal of radioactive waste. Prior to coming to the Agency, Mr. Taniguchi was Executive Director of Nuclear Power Engineering Corporation, Japan.
Mr. Taniguchi spent 30 years working for the Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry. As the Deputy Director General in charge of nuclear policy, he was the Japanese Government's chief administrative officer on all aspects of commercial use of nuclear energy, including safety and regulation. Mr. Taniguchi gives regular lectures as a visiting Professor at the University of Tokyo, where he majored in nuclear engineering. |
