Dr Holm was educated at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, and gained an MD in 1977 followed by his PhD in oncology in 1980.
From 1981-1985 Dr Holm was Secretary of the Swedish Society of Radiotherapy, followed by President of the Nordic Society of Radiotherapy from 1983-1986. From 1982-1992 he was Associate Professor of Oncology at the Karolinska Institute. From 1987-1992 he was Head of the Department of Cancer Prevention at Karolinska Hospital. From 1992-1995 he was Director of the National Institute of Public Health. From both 1985-1989 and 1993-1996 he was Member of Committee 1 of ICRP. Since 1996 Dr Holm was a Representative of the Swedish delegation to UNSCEAR, followed by his appointment as Vice Chairman of the Committee for 1997-98, and subsequently Chairman for 1999-2000. His current appointments include his role as Director General of the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority, Chairman of the ICRP, Swedish Representative of UNSCEAR, a member of the Commission on Safety Standards of the IAEA and a member of the Board of the Swedish Nuclear Power Inspectorate. Dr Holm has published approximately 300 reviewed papers in scientific journals, mostly in epidemiology and particularly radiation epidemiology. His honorary appointments include 2004 Honorary Professor at the School of Radiation Medicine and Public Health at Soochow University, Suzhou, PR. China. Finally, he received the Antoine Béclère medal of the Centre Antoine Béclère, Paris in 2005. |
