Adrian Paterson
Adi Paterson is General Manager, Business Development & Operations, PBMR, South Africa.
Dr Paterson is a graduate of the University of Cape Town with a BSc in Chemistry and a PhD in Engineering. Following a period of research on ceramic materials, he became Director of the Division of Materials Science and Technology at South Africa's Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in 1990. He became an Executive Vice-President: Technology and Policy in 1996 and became joint CIO of the CSIR and University of Pretoria during 2000 and 2001. In October 2001 he was seconded to the Department of Arts, Culture, Science and Technology, now the Department of Science and Technology, where he was appointed as Chief Operating Officer in 2003.
Dr Paterson has served his country in numerous capacities in the fields of science and technology. He was a member of the task team that drafted the South African Green Paper on Science and Technology in 1995. He has served on the executive of the National Advisory Council for Innovation (NACI), and been a member of the South African Research and Innovation Management Association (SARIMA). He was a member of the South African Negotiating Team at the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002.
Dr Paterson was elected to the Academy of Science of South Africa in 1994 and to the South African Academy of Engineering in 2002. In 2003 he was appointed Extraordinary Professor in the Department of Engineering and Technology Management of the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment and Information Technology at the University of Pretoria.
