| Dr Susan E. Ion is Director of Technology and Operations for British Nuclear Fuels plc (BNFL), as which she is responsible for the company's R&D budget and for ensuring that the R&D projects undertaken are well matched with the requirements of the business units. She is also responsible for the overall coordination of technical support work for the operating plants and major projects. Dr Ion has a background in materials science and engineering, gaining degrees at Imperial College, University of London. She spent her early career in fuel process and product development within BNFL's Fuel Division, before becoming commercial manager responsible for oxide fuel sales and technology licensing. She became Head of R&D for Fuel Division in 1990 before assuming her current position in 1992. Dr Ion was winner of the UK's Hinton Medal for outstanding contribution to nuclear engineering in 1993, and was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 1996. |
