BOB FLORIAN
Dr Robert (Bob) J Florian was born and raised in Brisbane, Australia. He completed a Bachelor of Applied Science in Physics at the Queensland Institute of Technology in 1977. After graduation, he worked for the Queensland Cement and Lime Company in Brisbane in the areas of industrial pollution control, implementation of noise abatement and hearing protection programmes, and testing cements.
In 1979, Bob completed a Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering and in 1982 earned a PhD in Nuclear Engineering at Virginia Tech (USA).
He has held positions as a Reactor Engineer and Startup Test Engineer at the North Anna Power Station and Wolf Creek Generating Station. In 1985, he joined Southern Company, holding the position of Reactor Engineering Supervisor at the Vogtle Electric Generating Plant. In 1988, he transferred to the Southern Company subsidiary Southern Nuclear and held several positions including Nuclear Fuels and Contracts Coordinator, Core Designer, Principal Licensing Engineer, and currently, Project Engineer managing major multi-million dollar capital projects for Southern Nuclear’s Farley Nuclear Plant.
During 1997, he returned to Australia as Head of HIFAR (High Flux Australian Reactor) Support at
the Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organization (ANSTO). He then returned to the USA to continue his career with Southern Nuclear
Dr Florian is a member of the Institution of Engineers Australia (IEAust) and is a Charted Professional Engineer in Australia. He also holds a Professional Engineering licence in the state of Alabama (US). He enjoys hobbies such as photography and tennis and is also a certified tennis teaching professional by Tennis Australia and the United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA).
