CHUNG-WON CHO
Dr Chung-Won Cho has devoted his career to atomic energy activities. He is the foremost
atomic professional in Korea and is prominent in international nuclear communities. He has vast experience in the construction and operation of all 20 Korean nuclear power plants, in radiation and radioisotope application and in waste disposal measures.
His career began in 1979 as Assistant Director for Nuclear Safety at the Ministry of Science and Technology, the government body responsible for atomic energy administration in Korea. His first task was to successfully license Korea’s first nuclear power plant, Kori-1. Dr Cho successfully accomplished the safety assessment of Kori-1, reflecting the lessons learnt from the TMI incident, and throughout his career has recognized the critical importance of safety.
Dr Cho spoke on his experiences of the Korean atomic energy research and development story at the World Nuclear University (WNU) in 2007, which was hosted by Korea.
He is the leading Korean expert in international nuclear activities, conducting nearly all the cooperation agreements with the USA, Japan, UK, France, Canada, Australia, Russia, China, Sweden, Chile, and South Africa as well as other nations.
Dr Cho is an enthusiastic advocate of future nuclear systems, strongly supporting the Generation IV International Forum (GenIV), International Project on Innovative Nuclear Reactors and Fuel Cycles (INPRO) and the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP).
Dr Cho was born on December 8th, 1953: the day of President Eisenhower's famous "Atoms for Peace" speech at the United Nations.
