JONG-SHIN KIM
Mr Kim received a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Seoul National University (1972) and a master’s degree in business administration from Ajou University (2008). He was also the recipient of a doctor honoris causa from Soong Sil University in 2008.
Mr Kim began his career at Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) in 1972, where he became a Chief Manager of KEPCO Paris Office in 1987, a Director General of the Overseas Project Department and Power Generation Department in 1997 and 1998 respectively, and a Site Vice President of Kori Nuclear Power Plants in 1999. In 2001, KHNP was separated from KEPCO and held all the country’s nuclear and hydro assets (KHNP). Following this restructuring, he became a Senior Vice President of KHNP.
In 2004, he was appointed as the President and Chief Executive Officer of Korea Western Power Co (a subsidiary of KEPCO). After many successful innovations in Western Power, he came back to KHNP as a President and CEO in 2007, where his work focuses on the building of a nuclear safety culture priority, promoting self-reliance of nuclear technology such as OPR1000 and APR1400, and fostering human resources within Asia and other countries requiring nuclear power plants. With 35 years of experience in nuclear power generation, he has played a major role in the complete history of Korea’s nuclear power development.
In 2008 Mr Kim was awarded the Order of the Legion of Honour for his outstanding contribution to nuclear industry cooperation between Korea and France. He received a Distinguished Service Award from the Project Management Institute in 2005. He also serves as chairman of the Korean Society of Pressure Vessel and Piping, vice-chairman of the Korea Standards Association, and as a senior advisor to the Korean Society for Quality Management.
