SRIKUMAR BANERJEE

Dr Srikumar Banerjee joined the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai in 1967 after obtaining a BTech in metallurgical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Kharagpur. He also obtained a PhD from IIT, Kharagpur while working in BARC. As Director of BARC between 2004-2010 he provided leadership in the development of advanced reactor technology, fuel cycle technology and strategic programmes.

Presently, Dr Banerjee is Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission and Secretary to the Department of Atomic Energy of the Government of India. He is one of India’s leading experts in materials science and technology and has made outstanding contributions to many materials related areas, basic as well as application oriented. His comprehensive work on physical metallurgy of zirconium alloys and radiation induced order-disorder transition in alloys are widely quoted in scientific literature. His work has also provided a basis for developing a novel fabrication schedule for the pressure tubes used in the Indian Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs).

Dr Banerjee is a recipient of many national and international awards and honours and has had professional interactions with several research groups in India and abroad. He has held various visiting positions overseas, including the University of Sussex, UK, Max-Planck Institut fuer Metalforschung - Institut fuer Physik, Stuttgart and Forschungszeutrum, Juelich, Germany, and the Ohio State University, USA.

Dr Banerjee is a Fellow of Indian Academy of Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy, the National Academy of Sciences India, the Indian National Academy of Engineering and the Third World Academy of Sciences.
