JONATHAN MIRRLEES-BLACK
Dr Jonathan Mirrlees-Black has over 20 years of experience in investment banking (Exane BNP Paribas, Lehman Brothers, Dresdner Kleinwort Benson), management consulting (Cambridge Economic Policy Associates and Coopers & Lybrand), and corporate planning (with BP). He has advised on strategic energy market issues in Europe, Asia, and Latin America; has been lead analyst for a series of European utility privatizations; and as an investment analyst developed a track record as a strategic thinker, identifying structural change early. He is currently an independent consultant, advising on economics, finance, and strategy with a particular focus on energy, infrastructure and environmental markets.
As an investment analyst, he developed a particular expertise in nuclear power. At Exane BNP Paribas, he was lead analyst for the €7bn initial public offering (IPO) of the world’s largest nuclear operator, EDF. In 2007 he published an acclaimed piece of cross-sector research What if the future is nuclear? which assessed the future prospects for nuclear power, and associated with this he organized and chaired a conference on the issues. He has recently advised the International Association for Energy Economics (IAEE) on financing nuclear power, and is currently advising a range of leading companies on energy policy.
In addition to client work he teaches a course on equity research for the Judge Business School Masters of Finance course at Cambridge University; is investigating innovative ways of raising finance for low-carbon energy investment; and is member of the Future Regulation Advisory Panel of the UK water regulator, OFWAT.
He has a BA in Pure Mathematics from Sheffield University, and MPhil and DPhil degrees in economics from Oxford University.
